Fixing permission problems

Speakly's own permission screen is Settings → Permissions. It lists Keyboard Shortcut and Microphone Access as Required, Accessibility Access and Screen Recording Access as Optional, and each card can open the right system pane for you. After changing anything at OS level, come back and click Recheck Permissions — the hint next to it reads "Click after enabling permissions in System Settings".

macOS: microphone denied

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone (on macOS 12 and earlier: System Preferences → Security & Privacy → Privacy → Microphone).
  2. Turn on the switch next to Speakly.
  3. Back in Speakly, click Recheck Permissions in Settings → Permissions.
  4. Quit and reopen Speakly if it still reports no access.

macOS: accessibility

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility (older macOS: System Preferences → Security & Privacy → Privacy → Accessibility, where you first clicked the padlock).
  2. Turn on Speakly. If it is not in the list, add it with the + button.
  3. Click Recheck Permissions in Settings → Permissions.

macOS: screen recording

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording — the same path Speakly names when it cannot open the pane itself.
  2. Turn on Speakly, then quit and reopen it; macOS only applies this one on restart.
This permission does not record your screen
Speakly uses it to read the name and title of the window in focus, so it can pick the matching style and rule. Its own description says: We don't record your screen — no screenshots, no video. (Reading the visible text of a window is a different permission — Accessibility — and only happens in Agent Mode or when a rule asks for it.)

Windows: microphone

  1. Open Windows Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & security → Microphone (Windows 10: Privacy → Microphone).
  3. Enable microphone access, and enable access for desktop apps.
  4. Check that Speakly appears in the list and is enabled.
  5. Restart Speakly.

Windows: hotkeys not working

  1. Right-click the Speakly shortcut.
  2. Choose Run as administrator.
  3. This is needed when the window you are dictating into is itself elevated — a non-elevated app cannot send keys to it.
