Updates — Speakly

Speakly keeps itself current: an installed copy checks for a new version shortly after launch and every four hours after that, downloads whatever it finds in the background, and then waits for you to install it. Settings → About shows the version you are on and the state of that process.

Checking manually

Click Settings in the left sidebar of the main window
Open the About section
Under Software Updates, click Check for Updates
The status line reports Checking for updates... and then either You are up to date! or that a new version is available and downloading

Installing a downloaded update

When a download finishes, the version block shows Update ready and the button becomes Install Update and Restart. Clicking it quits Speakly and reopens it on the new version.

Nothing installs behind your back

The download is automatic, the install is not. Speakly does not apply a pending update when you quit the app — it waits until you click Install Update and Restart.

What you see while it works

Update available next to the version number while the download runs
A progress bar labelled Downloading update... with a percentage
Update ready and a message that the new version is ready to install once the download completes
An error banner if the check or the download fails; it clears itself after a few seconds

Where the version comes from

Updates are published as GitHub releases and fetched from there. Automatic checking only runs in an installed build, so a copy started from source in development mode never updates itself.
