Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 2026
Introduction
Speakly is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our voice transcription application. Speakly is designed with privacy as a core principle — most processing happens locally on your device.
Data We Collect
Account Information
When you create an account, we collect your email address and name through our authentication provider (Clerk). This is necessary to manage your account and license.
Payment Information
Payment processing is handled by Stripe. We do not store your credit card information. Stripe may collect payment details as described in their privacy policy.
Trial Abuse Prevention
To prevent abuse of our free trial system, we store a cryptographic hash (SHA-256) of your email address. This hash cannot be reversed to reveal your actual email and is used solely to prevent the same email from getting multiple free trials.
Usage Counters
When you dictate, the app sends us a count of the work done: how many words were transcribed, which engine transcribed them, and when. It never sends the transcribed text, a sample of it or a summary — the record has no field for content. We use these counters to verify your licence and to see which engines people actually rely on. You can inspect the same numbers in the app under Settings → Statistics.
Data We Do NOT Collect
We do not collect, store, or have access to:
- Your audio recordings
- Your transcriptions
- Your dictionary entries
- Your custom prompts
- Your notes
- The text Speakly reads from your screen for Agent Mode or a rule
Local Processing
When you use a local model, transcription happens entirely on your device and no audio is sent to any server. Your transcriptions, dictionary, custom prompts and notes are stored in a local database on your machine — we cannot access it. That database is not encrypted by Speakly; see Security below.
Bring Your Own Key (BYOK)
When you use your own API keys, audio, text and — when you turn on screen context for Agent Mode or a rule — the text visible in your active window are sent directly from your device to the provider you choose. Speakly does not intercept, store, or process this data. You are subject to the privacy policy of the provider you use:
- OpenAI
- Groq
- Anthropic (Claude)
- Google (Gemini)
- Mistral
- OpenRouter
- Cerebras
- Deepgram
We recommend reviewing each provider's privacy policy before using their services.
Screen Context
Agent Mode, and any Custom Prompts rule where you tick “Read my screen for context”, read the text visible in the window you are working in. This is read through the operating system's accessibility layer — Speakly takes no screenshots and no video. That text is sent only to the AI model you configured (a local model on your machine, or a cloud provider called with your own key). It is never stored by Speakly and never reaches our servers. Turning the rule off, or denying the Accessibility permission, stops it entirely.
Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services:
- Clerk: Authentication (Google, Microsoft, Apple, GitHub sign-in)
- Stripe: Payment processing
- Vercel: Hosting for our website and API (processes request metadata such as IP address)
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Correct inaccurate data
- Delete your account and associated data
- Export your data
- Withdraw consent at any time
When you delete your account, we remove your personal information from our servers. Local data on your device remains under your control.
Security
Traffic between the app and our servers uses HTTPS. On your device, your API keys and app settings are stored encrypted with a key unique to your machine. Your transcriptions, notes, dictionary and custom prompts are stored in a local database that is not encrypted by Speakly — if you need protection at rest for those, enable full-disk encryption (FileVault on macOS, BitLocker on Windows). No security measure is perfect, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Data Retention
We keep your account information and licence record for as long as your account exists, and usage counters for as long as they are needed to verify your licence and understand engine usage. When you delete your account we remove your personal information from our servers; we may retain the anonymous hash used to prevent repeated free trials, and any records we are legally required to keep, such as payment records held by Stripe for tax purposes. Anything stored on your device stays there until you delete it.
Legal Basis and Where You Are
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we process your data under the GDPR: to perform our contract with you (account, licence, payments), and on our legitimate interest in preventing trial abuse and in knowing which engines to support. If you are in Brazil, the same processing is carried out under the LGPD on the equivalent bases. You may object, ask for a copy, ask for correction or ask for deletion at any time by writing to the address below, and you may complain to your local data protection authority (in Brazil, the ANPD).
Children
Speakly is not directed at children. You must be at least 16 years old, or the minimum age of digital consent in your country, to create an account.
Who Is Responsible
Speakly is operated by Rodolfo Bortolin, an independent developer based in Brazil, who acts as the data controller for the information described above. Contact: support@tryspeakly.com.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by email or through the application.
