Custom Dictionary

Add custom words for better accuracy

Add technical terms, names and specialised vocabulary so the transcription engine stops guessing at them. The page's own banner puts it as: "Speakly will prioritize these words during transcription."

How it works

Your entries are sent along with the audio on every recording, as a vocabulary hint. Which field carries them depends on the engine — some take a free-text prompt, others take an explicit keyword list. The one exception is Local Whisper: the on-device engine accepts no vocabulary hint, so the dictionary does not affect local transcriptions.

Provider support

Every cloud transcription engine receives your dictionary, through the field that engine offers:

  • OpenAI (Your Key) — sent as the Whisper prompt
  • Groq (Your Key) — sent as the Whisper prompt
  • Mistral (Your Key) — sent as the prompt; Voxtral takes the OpenAI-compatible field
  • Custom API — sent as the prompt, for any OpenAI-compatible endpoint you configure
  • ElevenLabs (Your Key) — sent as Scribe keyterms
  • Google (Your Key) — sent as speech-context phrases
  • Deepgram (Your Key) — sent as keywords for keyword boosting
  • Local Whisper — not supported: the local engine accepts no vocabulary field, so dictionary entries are ignored
If a term still comes out wrong
A prompt biases the model rather than forcing a spelling — Whisper follows the style of a prompt, not instructions — so results vary term by term with OpenAI, Groq, Mistral and Custom API. ElevenLabs, Google and Deepgram take the entries as an explicit vocabulary list instead. If one stubborn term matters to you, try one of those three in Settings → Transcription.

How to add a word

  1. Open the main window and pick Dictionary in the sidebar.
  2. Click New Word.
  3. Type the term into Word or Phrase exactly as it should appear — the placeholder suggests e.g., Anthropic, ChatGPT, Kubernetes.
  4. Click Add Word. (Editing an entry, the same button reads Update Word.)

What to add

  • Technical terms and jargon: API names, programming terms, industry vocabulary
  • Company and product names: Speakly, GitHub, Kubernetes
  • Names of people you mention often: colleagues, clients, unusual spellings
  • Acronyms and abbreviations: BYOK, STT, LLM
Spelling matters
Enter each term exactly as it should appear in the output. The dictionary helps the engine land on your spelling; it will not correct a spelling you typed wrong.

Limits

  • 300 characters in total across all entries. The counter above the list reads 0/300 characters used, and New Word is disabled once you hit 300.
  • 25 characters per entry — the input simply stops accepting more.
  • Entries live on your device, in Speakly's local database. They are not synced to a server.
Custom Dictionary — Speakly
